I could not say
That joy and sorrow in this life
Is sin and merit in another birth.
As it is said,
Wisdom ariseth from conference,
Shiva from wisdom, and deliverance
From Shiva: deliverance is nowhere else' -
Sorrow and joy are from attachment; but
It is not to be assumed
That sin and merit arise
From the inherited past,
Kapila SiddhaMallikaarjuna!

Whose piety is not conscious of itself;
He only is a Mahesh, Sir,
Who is not conscious of attainment though
He has attained.
Success and failure come but once, Look you, Kapila SiddhaMallikarjuna!

Look, iron is no more
At contact with the alchemic stone;
Look, darkness is no more
At contact with the light;
Look, illness is no more
At contact with ambrosia.
The wheel of births ceases to be

Would you know what is Heaven? A name for bliss.
Would you know what is hell? A name for pain.
Joy is but merit, pain is grief.
When joy departs, we call it grief;
When grief departs, we call it joy.
You cannot know sorrow and joy
Upon first principles:
Do you see grief
In fellowship with joy,
Kapila SiddhaMallikarjuna!

What use to mourn
When your progenitor is dead?
What use to mourn
When a large cobra bites you?
No use! what good is anything
To a cobra caught up in an eagle's beak,
Kapila Siddha Mallikarjuna?
